The Norris Medical Library is seeking an energetic librarian to provide leadership and expertise in designing, developing and supporting the library’s virtual presence. It is essential that the librarian be a highly inquisitive individual who thrives on exploring new technologies and has the ability to create and suggest useful applications in an information/knowledge environment. The librarian is primarily responsible for identifying, evaluating, implementing and teaching the use of new technologies to improve information access and learning materials to support the library’s mission. Additionally, the Emerging Technologies Librarian manages the web sites for the Norris Medical Library and the Wilson Dental Library; develops and maintains the system architecture; leads the library web team; collaborates with other librarians and reports to the Associate Director of Systems and Information Technology.
 
Norris Medical Library is located on the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus in Los Angeles. The library contains 175,000 volumes and subscribes to 1,444 current print journals and 2,425 current electronic journals. Users include medical, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and basic sciences graduate students, 1,483 full-time faculty, and a large number of other health professionals. The library staff of 44.2 FTE includes 14.8 librarians. See http://www.usc.edu/nml/ for more information.  USC is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer that actively seeks diversity in the workplace.
 
Responsibilities:
·   Track trends, investigate new developments and applications, and incorporate appropriate technologies into the library environment to improve library services and access to information. 
·   Share technology knowledge and train others to improve skills of library staff and encourage integration of technology into the library’s physical and virtual presence.
·   Enhance and maintain the Norris Medical Library and Wilson Dental Library web sites to meet changing needs of users.
·   Oversee library web data maintainers and chair the library’s web committee.
·   Participate in reference services including staffing the reference desk, teaching workshops, serving as a library liaison and consulting with users in areas of expertise.
·   Participate in library planning; serve on library, campus, and university committees; participate in professional, scholarly and service activities. Keep abreast of and make contributions to professional literature.
 
Required:
·   Master's degree from an ALA-accredited graduate program.
·   Familiarity with current trends, standards and emerging technologies in libraries and the web.
·   Demonstrated aptitude in the use of technology.
·   Knowledge and experience with web architecture, design, and administration including HTML, CSS, Javascript, social networking tools, mobile devices and accessibility and usability issues.
·   An understanding and working knowledge of Content Management Systems.
·   Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative; strong user-service orientation; ability to work cooperatively in a team environment; excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.
 
 
 
Preferred:
·   Knowledge of Dreamweaver, XHTML, XML, PHP, Java, Perl, MySQL and relational databases.
·   Skills in designing online instruction, including Webinars and tutorials.
·   Experience in health sciences libraries or in healthcare environments.
 
Salary: Beginning salary between $50,000 - $70,000 depending upon experience. This position is in a continuing-appointment track, the USC Libraries equivalent to tenure.
